We take great pleasure in announcing the 3rd RSSA/SASPI Paediatric Imaging Congress which will take place at The Maslow Hotel in Sandton from 6 – 9 February 2020. This congress will focus on Paediatric Neuroradiology and Musculoskeletal Imaging. The Faculty consists of 9 internationally renowned Paediatric Radiologists. The selected topics will give insight and guidelines into the management of both common and challenging conditions encountered.
The Paediatric Neuroradiology Faculty
Professor James Barkovich, Chief of Paediatric Neuroradiology at the University of California, San Francisco. He specialises in the diagnoses of neurological disorders in infants and children, with a research interest in neonatal brain injury, and the use of MRI to understand both normal and abnormal brain development. He has published 385 articles, and has authored and co-authored 9 textbooks.
Dr Chen Hoffmann, head of the neuroradiology service, in charge of the Pediatric and Fetal neuroimaging, in the Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Israel
Professor Susan Palasis, Radiologist in Atlanta, Georgia affiliated with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She has numerous publications in peer reviewed scientific journals. She currently is a member of the American Society of Neuroradiology and the Society of Pediatric Radiology (SPR) scientific committees.
Professor Zoltan Patay, Chief of Neuroimaging and Professor of Radiology, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, University of Tennessee Health Science Centre, Memphis. He has numerous publications in peer reviewed scientific journals and had delivered more than 170 lectures at internal symposia, congresses and courses.
Professor Sanjay Prabhu, Staff Pediatric Neuroradiologist at Boston Children’s Hospital, Assistant Professor of Radiology at the Harvard Medical School in Boston. He serves as the Director of Advanced Image Analysis Lab, Clinical Director of SIMPeds3D Print Service and Medical Director of Imaging Informatics at Boston Children’s Hospital. He has more than 100 publications in peer reviewed scientific journals.
Professor Andrea Rossi, is a Professor of Neuroradiology at the University of Genoa and the Secretary General of the European Society of Neuroradiology (ESNR). He is the co-leader of the Neuro-Mig Network Group 2. He has more than 337 publications in peer reviewed scientific journals.
Professor Pia Maly Sundgren is the Head of Department of Radiology, Clinical Sciences, Lund University, Sweden. She holds multiple leadership positions in various international Radiological fraternities including President of the ISMRM, Vice –president of the ESNR, Chair of ESNR Paediatric Imaging subgroup. She is a member of the ESR scientific and research committees. She has more than 145 publications in peer reviewed scientific journals.
The Paediatric Musculoskeletal Faculty
Professor Diego Jaramillo, Pediatric radiologist within the Department of Radiology at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, and Adjunct Professor of Radiology at Stanford University. His greatest expertise and scientific contribution is in the field of Paediatric Musculoskeletal Radiology and the application of MRI. He has more than 200 publications in peer reviewed scientific journals.
Professor Tal Laor, Professor in Diagnostic Radiology, Specialist Radiologist in Boston, MA. She was previous chief of Musculoskeletal Imaging, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Cincinnati, OH. She has numerous publications in peer reviewed scientific journals and was awarded the SPR Presidential Recognition Award.

The 3rd RSSA/SASPI Paediatric Imaging Congress Steering Committee consists of Professor Nasreen Mahomed, Chair of the South African Society of Pediatric Imaging (SASPI), Head of Department of Radiology Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital and Honorary Professor of Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, Professor Tracy Kilborn, Head of Department of Red Cross War Memorial Children’s hospital, Dr Ebrahim Banderker, SASPI vice-chair, Senior Consultant Radiologist at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s hospital and Dr Ashmitha Rajkumar, SASPI Secretary and Consultant Radiologist at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s hospital and Professor Leon Janse van Rensburg, Radiological Society of South Africa (RSSA) Congress Director.
The free paper session for the 2020 RSSA Travel Award of R50 000.00 will take place during the congress. There will also be a scientific and poster exhibitions with prizes of R15,000.00 each.
A special South African Journal of Radiology (SAJR) dedicated to Paediatric
Radiology will be published in conjunction with the congress.
